About Us

Founded in September 2023, System Jiu-Jitsu is dedicated to helping our community develop no-gi jiu-jitsu skills and cultivate a lifelong passion for martial arts. We view Jiu-Jitsu not only as a sport but as a way to stay fit, connect with a community, push personal boundaries, learn to defend yourselves, gain confidence, and enjoy the journey with friends.

Jacen and Nick, co-founders of System Jiu-Jitsu, have been training partners since 2010. Over the past 14 years, they've spent thousands of hours on the mats, honing a training framework focused on the most effective and efficient techniques to accelerate skill development.

Before launching System Jiu-Jitsu, they operated The maT, previously known as Craig Kukuk's Freestyle Training Center. They took over after Craig moved to Arizona but had to step away due to other commitments. Now, they're back, more experienced and enthusiastic than ever.

Jacen received his black belt from Craig Kukuk in 2006, becoming Craig's first black belt. For those unfamiliar, Craig Kukuk was the first non-Brazilian to earn a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu in 1992. He also taught at the Gracie Academy and released the first widely distributed jiu-jitsu instructional video, laying the foundation for many early practitioners in the US and beyond. Jacen has a professional MMA record of 10-3 and has competed in EBI 6 and EBI 9. He is a devoted family man, married with two children, and maintains a rigorous fitness regimen.

Nick received his black belt from Jacen in 2015, marking Jacen's first time awarding this rank. With a background in wrestling, Nick brings a unique perspective to training. He is also a father of two, engaged to be married, and juggles his time between the gym, working as a software executive, and driving his kids around town to various sports.

Lineage Under Craig Kukuk

Craig Kukuk is considered the first non-Brazilian to earn a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He began training under Rorion Gracie in 1981 at the original Gracie Academy in Torrance, California. Craig trained extensively with Rorion, Royce, Royler, Rickson, and Rolker Gracie during the foundational era of BJJ in America.Button

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers To Commonly Questions

I'm completely new to this. Can I still join?

Absolutely! Our classes are designed for all levels, including total beginners. We'll teach you the fundamentals and you'll learn alongside others starting out too.

What should I wear to Jiu-Jitsu classes?

Wear comfortable tight fitting workout gear, T-Shirts, Rashguards, Shorts, Sweat Pants, Gi Pants are all ok.

How often should I attend classes to

progress?

Minimum for Improvement (2 times per week): You'll still see progress at this pace, but it'll likely be slower. This is a good option if you're focused on basics, have a busy schedule, or primarily want Jiu-Jitsu for enjoyment and fitness.

The Sweet Spot (3-4 times per week): This is where you'll see consistent skill development. You'll build stronger muscle memory and have the time to practice a wider range of techniques.

Fast Track (5+ times per week): This is for those wanting rapid progress, perhaps with competition in mind. Keep in mind that rest/recovery are crucial to avoid burnout and injury at this training level.

What does a typical class look like?

All classes are lead by black belt instructors. We have designed our classes to enable our students to maximize their skill development, and potential, with no experience necessary. We focus on skill building, live training, and direct hands on (personalized) instruction.

What is NoGi Jiu-Jitsu?

NoGi Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art where you don't wear the traditional uniform (the gi). Instead, you wear shorts and a rashguard or t-shirt. Focus is on controlling your opponent through holds, submissions, and dominant positions rather than using the gi for grips. It's a fantastic workout and a great way to learn self-defense.

I'm not very fit/flexible. Is that a problem?

Not at all! Jiu-Jitsu will actually help you GET fit and flexible. Everyone starts somewhere, and we'll support you to reach new levels of fitness. You do not need to get in shape to start, you get in shape by training.

I'm a bit nervous about getting hurt.

It's normal to feel that way! We prioritize safety, teach you how to stay safe, and always encourage you to tap (signal submission) if anything feels uncomfortable. You're in control.

Can I check it out?

Of course! Your first class is free, please claim your free trial and we will see you on the mats.
